Dewpoint Comfort Scale

By L.M.

Local weather forecasts almost always leave out an element that is absolutely critical in determining how comfortable a person will be in the warm season. The missing piece?? Dewpoint temperature. Relative humidity is often given but its shortcoming is included in its name....relative.

The RH is entirely dependent upon the temperature. Dewpoint, on the other hand, is a direct measure of moisture in the air.

Based on interviews conducted by this correspondent, it has been found that native northern New Englanders respond to dewpoints temperature as described below.

Note: this scale is intended for use in the warm season on days with a goodly supply of sunshine and relatively light winds.

DEWPOINT PERCEPTION
52 & lower COMFORTABLE
53-56 SLIGHTLY NOTICEABLE
57-59 QUITE NOTICEABLE
60-63 STICKY
64-69 UNCOMFORTABLE
70 + INTOLERABLE
